The Year 9 football team hosted Thornleigh this week in the Bolton League. Sharples couldn’t have hoped for a better start when Cole Bridge tapped in from close range but Thornleigh immediately replied and Sharples found themselves 3-1 down at half time. Sharples were competitive throughout against a big and strong Thornleigh side and, despite a hat trick from Cole Bridge, Sharples fell to a narrow 4-3 defeat. In the closing 10 minutes, Daniel Bankole rounded the keeper only to see his goal bound shot hand balled off the line. Unfortunately, Daniel couldn’t convert the penalty and the team were left to rue missed opportunities.
Year 10 were in action (the following day) against Ladybridge High School. The squad train pretty much every day at lunchtime and have been testing themselves every Friday against the school staff team.
It was a fantastic team performance and, despite being under pressure for large periods of the game, the team showed great resilience and organisation to keep a clean sheet. Matthew Senior continued to impress in goal and Sam Fullarton provided the magical moment needed to take all 3 points when he chipped in from 30 yards. Ahmed Yaseen epitomised the work ethic in the team with his performance.
On Thursday, the KS4 Girls’ Football team traveled to Westhoughton High School for the final Girls’ Football event of the term. The weather was kind to us which had the Sharples team in high spirits. Ten schools took part with Sharples being placed in a group with Turton, Cannon Slade, RIvington and Blackrod, Smithills and Westhoughton. Despite the girls playing five consecutive games their efforts and enthusiasm could not be faltered with fantastic performances against Turton, Westhoughton and Smithills. The team recorded a thrilling last minute victory against Smithills thanks to a fantastic through ball from Yasmin Walker in the final seconds. This placed Leah Winstanley in front of goal who hit the back of the net with a thunderbolt of a shot! There was some great team performances with the team showing a fantastic attitude despite having no rest in between fixtures. ‘Player of the Tournament’ was Leah Winstanley with some brilliant efforts in attack. All students had a thoroughly enjoyable time and represented the school in the highest manner.
