Below you will find further information on each subject that your child will engage with at Sharples. Directors of Subjects have provided additional information to support parents with their child’s learning whilst they are at Sharples.

 

English

Homework is set each Monday and is collected on Friday for Y10 and Y11. Any changes to this will be communicated to students directly and shown on Student Portal. Y10 complete homework on Educake. Y11 complete a GCSE style question that is set on Student Portal and submitted to the teacher. 

Y10 homework is for retrieval and consolidation purposes. We make sure we quiz pupils on comprehension, language, poetry and spelling each half term. All the questions each week are based on knowledge from the current year and previous years. 

Y11 have two tasks each week: one based on English Language and one based on English Literature. Their English Literature task links to a Friday Exam they have each week. 

Detentions for incomplete homework for Y11 take place on a Monday at lunchtime with Miss A Amdavadi. 

Detentions for incomplete homework for Y10 take place on a Monday after school.

Maths

Home learning is set fortnightly.

Y10 – set Wednesday via MathsWatch and is due the following Wednesday. 

Y11 – set Friday via Method Maths and is due the following Friday.

Both platforms provide video clip support and give instant feedback. Teachers review common errors in lessons. 

Home learning is used for consolidation of the topic currently being taught as well as retrieval of key skills from topics previously taught. Prior to assessments students are provided with resources to support their independent learning. 

There is an additional piece of optional homework each half term – project/investigative/creative type homework with reward points/prizes available to encourage creativity.

History

Homework is set each Monday and collected the following Monday. Y11 homework is set on Educake, Y10 is set via Google Classroom. All homework is based on retrieval and knowledge from lessons, Y10 has a particular focus on exam practice. As well as instant feedback via Educake, students complete a feedback sheet in lessons.

Geography

Home learning is set weekly on a Monday and due the following Sunday via Google Classroom. This provides links to Bookwidgets. KS4 sometimes get additional exam questions on paper for exam practice. As well as instant feedback via BookWidgets, students complete a feedback sheet in lessons. 

All homework is set by Mr A Barnes (A.Barnes@sharplesschool.co.uk) but individual teachers can set additional homework at KS4. 

 

Religious Studies

Home learning  is set weekly at KS4.Pupils are usually given 1 week to complete, this may change depending on topic and type of task. Home learning is mostly submitted on paper, there are some Google Quiz tasks also.  

Each classroom teacher sets the homework for individual classes. 

 

Modern Foreign Languages

Homework is set weekly, due dates differ between classes. For KS4, students access Pearson Active Learn to consolidate knowledge from lessons. There are a range of activities set based on all 4 skills of listening; reading; speaking and writing. Pupils receive instant feedback via online platforms and staff challenge main misconceptions in lessons.

Each classroom teacher sets the homework for individual classes. 

 

Design and Technology (Graphics and Engineering)

Home learning is set once every two weeks including online quizzes on Quizlet, completing exam questions or coursework on Google Docs or Slides. KS4 homework on Quizlet is mainly retrieval practice and occasionally for introducing new terms. Coursework elements set for homework promote independence and encourage students to apply learning from the classroom. This can often include interpreting drawings, reflecting on designs or generating ideas. Exam questions are set as homework to reinforce knowledge and apply knowledge to questions.

Each classroom teacher sets the homework for individual classes and gives feedback weekly. 

 

Design and Technology (Food and Textiles) 

Home learning is set on Fridays, this is due Thursday 11 p.m deadline via Google Classroom.  This is to aid retrieval, creativity and to engage students with curriculum based reading. 

 

Physical Education

KS4 homework is set once per week. Students are required to complete exam questions on EverLearner when preparing for the exam and coursework completion for most of the course. At KS4, students engage with coursework completion as students need to be up to date with their coursework. This encourages independent learning and time management. When studying the externally assessed unit exam questions are set each week to test retrieval of key knowledge.

Health and Social

Home learning is set weekly on Monday via Google Classroom and is due the following week. Feedback is given to the whole class verbally the following week.
