At Sharples, we ensure that the learning experience supports all of our learners to develop to their full potential. Through our Sharples Aspiring Programme we encourage students to challenge themselves not only academically, but also creatively and inquisitively. Our academically most able learners are supported by a challenging curriculum across the school and through enrichment activities that encourage them to look beyond school life.
We identify Sharples Aspiring students as the top 10% of each year group based on KS2 average scaled score in Maths and Reading. However, we recognise that students can have talent for different subjects without achieving this top 10% score. Our Directors of Subjects also identify these students in each subject and provide opportunities for students to enrich their learning beyond the taught curriculum.
The learning experience at Sharples School challenges all learners through stimulating, engaging lessons delivered by outstanding teachers across the curriculum. The Sharples Challenge activities are provided for pupils to take responsibility for their own learning, so that they develop as independent enquirers, creative thinkers and reflective learners who go on to achieve the highest academic standards. Students identified as Sharples Aspiring are particularly encouraged to attempt these activities in lessons.
The Sharples Advantage – Enrichment
We provide a wide range of opportunities for all students to enrich their learning across the curriculum:
- University visits e.g. Cambridge University Residential taster event.
- A visiting lecture series – lectures and talks from outstanding speakers from the fields of medicine, law, literature etc.
- Enrichment trips to local museums and events e.g. Manchester Science Museum, SpacePort, the London New Designers Trip, Ingleton Falls
- Participation in national competitions including the Rotary Debating competition, Young Chef of the Year, National Photography Competition, Shakespeare in Schools and Salters Chemistry festival.
