A vacancy has arisen for one parent governor to serve on the local governing board. A nomination form will be available from the school by e-mailing office@sharplesschool.co.uk. Alternatively you may collect a paper copy from school reception.

Becoming a governor is a very rewarding and worthwhile experience.  Ideally governors would have business skills and expertise or an education background. This is because the Governing Board needs to be effective and governors should be able to demonstrate skills and experience to fulfil this role. What is important is that governors are committed to their school, willing to ask questions and offer appropriate challenge and support.

Governors also need to be able to work as an enthusiastic member of the local governing board team with the aim of raising and maintaining high educational standards for all children. Governors are expected to act with integrity, honesty and objectivity and act at all times in the best interests of the school.

The prime focus of the local governing board is to develop the strategic direction of the school, be accountable to stakeholders and to ensure that financial resources are spent appropriately. The local governing board meets around five times a year (sometimes more) and sub-committees meet once per term. Meetings usually take place at 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. but can occasionally go beyond this time.

Governors have a number of opportunities to access training to develop and enhance their knowledge and skills and will expected to attend any development opportunities.

The local governing board would welcome nominations from parents who may have experience of or with the following skills and although they are desirable, they are not essential:

  • governance
  • education
  • data analysis
  • finance management
  • human resource management
  • local community knowledge
  • community services
  • premises & buildings management
  • commercial
  • special needs awareness
  • health and safety
  • leadership and management
  • marketing and PR

Please return your nomination form to d.makinson@sharplesschool.co.uk no later than 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday 23rd October, 2019 or alternatively you can drop it off at school reception for the attention of Mrs. D. Makinson.
