Cricket Catch-up

Sharples Year 9 and 10 cricket teams were both in action in the Bolton Cup this week.

Year 9 were first up, against St James’, and opted to bat after winning the toss. Marcus Jackson led the team to a total of 74 runs – scoring 33 runs in the process –  and only losing his wicket to an outstanding catch from the fielder at square leg.

Immediately putting pressure on St James’, Marcus and Rehman opened the bowling.  St James’ were struggling to put runs on the scoreboard. As St James’ aimed to increase their run rate, Rehman Afzal started to take their wickets with some outstanding bowling. It was a tense finish to the game but Sharples just fell short.  St James reached the target with 2 overs to go but only 1 wicket remaining.

On Thursday afternoon, Year 10 were in action in a Bolton Cup quarter final against Ladybridge at Eagley CC. It was always going to be a difficult encounter against the current town champions and that was how it ended up. Sharples lost the toss and were made to bat.  They couldn’t find their stride with the bat and lost some early wickets through excellent bowling. Zayd Adam top scored with the bat hitting some big shots to lead the team to a total of 53 runs. It was always going to be a difficult score to defend and, despite an early wicket from Zayd, Sharples couldn’t prevent the opposition from reaching their total with overs remaining.
