Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition

Sharples School’s first DofE expedition went to Rivington last weekend, undeterred by heavy rain on the Saturday. 37 Year 10 students are completing their Bronze Awards this year and this was their practice expedition in preparation for their qualifying expedition in July.

Teams of 5 or 6 worked together on a two day walk in the Lancashire countryside near Rivington, with an overnight camp at Bibby’s Farm near Chorley. The teams carried all of their own equipment, including tents, stoves and food and they cooked their own hot meals on their camp stoves in the evening. The teams were responsible for their own route finding and decisions. All in all it was a brilliant experience for the students, many of whom were camping and walking in the countryside for the first time. Despite the rain on Saturday, all the students showed tremendous positivity and determination and they really deserved their sunshine on the Sunday.

Lots of experience was gained (and lessons learned) ready for our qualifying expedition, which will be in the Clitheroe area in July.
