Children in England are eligible for free school meals (FSM) if their household receives Universal Credit or other qualifying benefits.

Current Eligibility Tiers (2026/2027 Academic Year)

Targeted FSM: For households receiving Universal Credit with an annual net earned income of £7,400 or less, or legacy benefits like income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the guarantee element of Pension Credit, or specific asylum support. This tier unlocks extra school funding like Pupil Premium.

Expanded FSM: For households receiving Universal Credit with an annual income above £7,400. This gives the child free meals only, with no extra funding for the school.
