Girls’ Sports Report

On Tuesday, our Year 8 Netball team travelled to Bolton School to take part in their annual tournament. Unfortunately, due to illness and other commitments, they were short of players so, at the last minute, Charlotte Robinson in Year 7 stood in. She showed real Sharples Spirit. When we arrived, we were given our fixtures for the tournament. We had a range of games to play. The girls were excited to get started. Our first match was against Rivington. They were a strong side and put on a good attacking performance. Unfortunately, we couldn’t manage to get the ball in the net, so lost our first game 3-0. We weren’t disheartened and went on to play Westhoughton. This was a game of equals as neither team managed to score and the game finished 0-0. We then had our first win against Kearsley 2-0. Lauren Heyes managed to score against the defence and our determination paid off. After that, we went on to beat Ladybridge, it was a close game but the girls worked hard to come back from a goal down, the game finished 2-1. Regrettably, we then went on to have 3 losses against Harper Green, Thornleigh and Canon Slade. Canon and Thornleigh both made it into the semi finals on, goal difference, so to lose to them was not that disheartening. They were both strong teams and finished 2nd and in 3rd in Bolton. We finished on a win against Mount St Joseph’s; we beat them 1-0 and the girls played fantastically well. They maintained a level of motivation throughout the tournament that I was proud of. Well done girls. Next week is the Year 7 tournament. Good luck to those girls.
