Super Learning Day 2016

Yoga-1Tuesday saw the first Super Learning Day of this term organised by Our Learning Skills for Life Coordinator Robert Poole. The day was centered around the theme of ‘Health and Wellbeing’ and saw Year Seven and Eight take part in a number of exciting activities, all aimed at improving their mental and physical well-being.
Our very own Miss Southern introduced Year Seven to yoga (see picture), with pupils saying they’d never felt so calm and relaxed. Meanwhile in art, Miss Davidson showed students how to de-stress with some ‘mindful colouring’. Other groups worked on stress management with Miss Fairclough and building their ‘growth mindset’ with Miss Gawne where their engineering skills were put to the test.
Year Eight focused on their physical health with Sharples Alumni from Bolton College returning to work with them on their fitness. We also had gym instructors from SERCO talking about the excellent sports facilities we have to offer here at Sharples, before making the pupils sweat with some circuit training!
Pupils also heard about the amazing story of Gulwarli Passarlay who spoke about his journey as a child refugee where he travelled from Afghanistan to Bolton, managing to escape prison camps and transports four times on the way.
Year Eight also had a first aid session before learning about communication skills and building positive relationships. One Year Eight group did so well on the Mellors Healthy Eating Challenge that there is talk of their ideas being rolled out onto the menu! Well done to all students involved and a big thank you to all staff.
