On Friday 9th December leaders from businesses, charities, colleges and universities descended on Sharples School for a “Super Learning Day” to share their knowledge and skills regarding careers and job opportunities.
The Super Learning Day, organised by Learning Skills for Life Coordinator Robert Poole, saw pupils from Year 7-10 complete a series of workshops based around developing knowledge of the world of work; developing teamwork, employability, resilience and leadership skills.
Year 7 completed a design challenge with our very own Mr Patel; volunteers from Natwest Moneysense helped Mr Hermida and Mrs Hughes deliver sessions about financial planning and all Year 7 pupils received a Moneysense certificate. In addition, other activities included a talk by Dr Shane McKie (from the university of Manchester), team building activities from the Bolton Lads and Girls Club and an introduction to student life by a Bolton University representative.
Furthermore, Year 8 participated in a number of workshops hosted by Bolton College, Bury College and Bolton Sixth Form College. The students learnt about career pathways and had a go at some college style lessons including hairdressing, health and social care, art, sport and A-Level English.
The Army provided activities for Year 10 with support from The 4th Battalion, Duke of Lancaster’s Regimental support team including a written survival exercise, STEM tower building, first aid and a laser range. Students trying some military issue rations, proved to be the highlight of the day!
Having received extremely positive feedback from both pupils and staff, we are all looking forward to the STEM Super Learning Day! This will take place during STEM week in March.
