Year 7
Football Team
There are pupils that won’t be receiving a badge today but I’m sure they will in the near future if they continue to attend all football practice. It’s excellent to see so many attending and all are an important part of the Year 7 squad.
It was a busy first term for the Year 7 football team with a number of league fixtures and cup competitions. There have been some excellent attacking performances, most notably against Mount St Joseph’s, with the team scoring four goals against them. Hassan Mitha has impressed throughout and captain Cole Bridge has put in some stand out performances and he is leading goal scorer from midfield. Josh Onley has led from defence and Rio Fish has impressed in net. It’s good to see he has recovered from the broken wrist he suffered at the end of the season.
Hockey
The Year 7s have been really committed to hockey this year! Some students showed real zeal and accidentally causing an injury Miss Gawne (mentioning no names).
With very few matches available, some student have played above their age range and also took part in a mixed tournament with St Catherine’s. We hope to see them all taking part again next year and also moving over to the football squad.
Cross country
Performing excellently, a special mention and award goes to Cole Crompton for his exceptional performance in cross country this term. He managed to finish in third position and qualifies to run in the GM Championships.
Netball
The netball league changed this year. Instead of playing all the schools in Bolton, we were put into a league with four other schools in. At the end of each match the opposition pick a ‘Player of the Match’. Lauren Heyes, Sally Ratcliffe and Crystal Sandiford have all received this title. In my opinion, the ‘Player of the Season’ has to be Crystal. Reading the games well, Crystal is a fantastic player who can turn a game round. She always has an immense impact on the outcome of games. Crystal has fully embraced the challenges set and has played up for Year 8 and even Year 9 during the season. After the Christmas break, we have one more game to play. As it stands we are top of the league! The team are looking forward to their tournament in March where they will get the opportunity to play more schools in Bolton. Well done girls and thank you for your commitment.
Year 8
Football Team
The team showed what great potential they had when they all turned up for a match in the Bolton Cup sweeping aside the opposition by six goals to one. This showed what the team are capable of when they all come and work together. After the winter break, Year 8 are still in the Bolton Cup quarter final and have every chance of progressing further in the cup.
Hockey
The Year 8s have been really consistent this year and have made massive progress in the game making them a real force to be reckoned with. Not afraid to get hurt, Libby Lever has happily taken on the role of sweeper/goal keeper, Jesika Eslick is dangerous up front and Libby McKee and Isobel Chamberlain are making it difficult for anyone to get passed them in defence. Games have been few and far between this year but we have a strong team for next year. It would be a great idea for all of these players to look into playing hockey outside of school – they are all more than capable!
Badminton Team
It has been great to see Year 8 pupils representing the school badminton cluding St. Joseph’s, Smithills, Mount St. Joseph’s and Kearsley Academy. At the start of the season, we also had a warm up game against the Canon Slade team and we also performed very well. Well done to Matthew Senior and Sam Fullarton.
Netball Team
The netball league changed this year. Instead of playing all the schools in Bolton we were put into a league with four other schools. St. Joseph’s, Smithills, Mount St. Joseph’s and Kearsley Academy. We also had a warm up game against Canon Slade at the start of the season. At the end of each match, the opposition pick a ‘Player of the Match’. Lois Robinson received this title over the other players. She is confident on the court and can play in both attack and defence. She has also played up for Year 9 and even Year 10 during the season receiving ‘Player of the Match’ for Year 9 too. We have one more game to play after the Christmas break but as it stands we are top of the league. The team are looking forward to their tournament in March where they will get the opportunity to play more schools in Bolton. Well done girls and thank you for your commitment.
Year 9
Football
It has been an excellent start to the season for the Year 9 football team enjoying their best season to date. The squad managed to put together a five game winning streak and are still in the Bolton Cup. Tom Stanway has been excellent in net and his performances were recognised when he was selected to represent the Bolton town team. It is difficult to pick out stand out performers as their biggest strength has been their efforts as a team. Their hard work has really started to pay off. Often playing out of position without complaints to help the team, Captain Jack Banks has epitomised this attitude.
Hockey
As Year 9s, the girls play for the KS4 team in hockey and matches have been very limited. Millie and Destiny have still come along to training to help coach the Year 7 and 8s. When they have had a chance to play, they have shown great flair. Neither of this dynamic duo is scared to give it their all and both work hard when competing.
Badminton Team
Most school badminton teams consist of Year 11 pupils but it has been excellent to see some younger players from Sharples competing in the Bolton League. Well done to Marcus Jackson and Cameron Jones.
Netball Team
The netball league changed this year. Instead of playing all the schools in Bolton we were put into a league with four other schools. St. Joseph’s, Smithills, Mount St. Joseph’s and Kearsley Academy. We also had a warm up game against Canon Slade at the start of the season. At the end of each match, the opposition pick a ‘Player of the Match’. Courtney Adamson received this title more than any other player. She is a committed member of the team, she never misses training and plays every match without fail. She is a fantastic role model to other players. She has also played in the year above (Year 10) during the season. I must also mention Milli Knowles who has committed fully to netball this year and has also received the title of ‘Player’s Player’. We have one more game to play after the Christmas break but as it stands we are top of the league. The team are looking forward to their tournament in March where they will get the opportunity to play more schools in Bolton. Well done girls and thank you for your commitment.
Year 10
Football team
The Year 10 team continue to be the biggest and most reliable squad in the school. It’s excellent to see so many from the year wanting to represent the school and training every day at lunch time. The size of the squad has increased this year which will be reflected in the number of badges that will be given out. Keane Smith deserves a special mention and acknowledgement as he has been representing the Bolton town team this year – what an excellent achievement!
Cross country
Special acknowledgement and recognition should go to Emily Jones who finished in the top fifteen and now qualifies to run in the GM Championships.
Badminton Team
Numerous badminton teams are made up from Year 10 pupils. The school has had some new additions to the squad this year and it has been great to see some of the girls representing the school team. Well done to Ryan Ashe, Tommy Banks, Josh Hart, Kevin Worsley, Lauren Edmonds, Hannah Abernethy, Demi Green and Mia Ellis.
Netball

We also had a warm up game against Canon Slade at the start of the season. Unfortunately, not many of the teams we have been drawn against in the league have Year 10 teams. For me, all the girls who have played this season have shown commitment. They attend the Bolton Schools’ netball tournament in October and managed to win a couple of their games. However, the ones they lost were against formidable teams like Bolton School and Turton. We have one more game to play after the Christmas break but as it stands the girls are top of the league. Well done girls!
