Sports Report

At the start of the academic year, pupils have been reflecting on their fitness levels and encouraged to set goals for the new year to improve their health. In lessons, pupils have been completing the bleep test to assess their fitness level. It has been excellent to see our pupils doing their best in order to get an accurate picture of their fitness. Well done to all participants and especially those who achieved their personal best.

Pupils have also been completing the annual cross country run. Top performers will be reported next week when all year groups have completed it. Look out for a display of the top performers next week in the leisure centre and on the school’s noticeboards.

The football teams were back in action this week as Year 10 and Year 8 played Mount St Josephs’. Sharples started the game well and despite conceding first, scored an excellent equaliser through Keane Smith. It has been an excellent week for Keane after he found out earlier in the week that he has been selected to represent the Bolton Town Team on Saturday against Trafford. The equaliser was to be Sharples’ only goal of the game despite creating a number of clear cut opportunities. The defence struggled to cope with the oppositions fire power and couldn’t avoid suffering their first defeat of the season.

Year 8 managed to do something not many teams manage; score 4 goals and still lose the game. It was an entertaining game for the neutral as both teams created and converted chances, but defensively looked a bit rusty. Matthew Senior scored a superb free kick from outside the box to start the come back after Sharples fell behind. Abdifatah Mohammed covered every blade of grass on the pitch and deserved his goal. He avoided the offside trap and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. The standout performance in this game was by Year 7 pupil Cole Bridge, scoring 2 excellent goals on his debut despite playing against older opposition.

Next week’s football fixtures are as follows, Year 10 will play Westhoughton away on Tuesday whilst Year 7 and 9 play at home on Wednesday.

The netball teams will also be back in action on Wednesday for their first game of the season.
