Sports Day 2017

The school couldn’t have asked for nicer weather for the annual sports day. This year saw a new format to the day aiming to build in mass participation and it enabled pupils to compete in inter-house competitions throughout the day. It was fantastic to see over 170 pupils participating every period throughout the day and then all of KS3 sitting in their houses to cheer on their relay teams period 6.

Every period students were able to participate in various activities put on by the Army, fitness suite challenges, swimming competitions, dodgeball, inter house football and rounders ran throughout the day. This involved all year groups.

Mr Hermida (Jupiter), Mr Hesford (Mercury), Miss Green (Venus) and Miss Heaton (Saturn) were there all day encouraging and coaching their house teams. Participation points were given, bonus points collected on the day for outstanding contribution or performance, and points for winning each tournament or the relay.

There was also an extra relay race put on with the winning teams from Y8 and Y9 competing against a staff team comprising of Mr Hesford, Mr Baldwin, Mr Grundy and Mr Hermida. Unfortunately, age caught up with the staff team and they couldn’t beat the Y9 boys – they were extremely impressive! Mr Hesford did well to take part after completing the Bolton Iron Man 2 days earlier; a fantastic achievement although he was understandably sore which slowed down the staff team, not that we’re making any excuses 🙂

Overall, it was a fantastic day of sport and it was superb to see so many of our pupils physically active and doing their best. With it being an inter house competition, there has to be a winner and the final positions were as follows:

1st = Mercury

2nd = Jupiter

3rd= Saturn

4th= Venus

Mr Hesford rounded off his fantastic week with his first win as house leader in the first major inter house competition of the year! Next year promises to be very exciting with a whole host of different inter house activities planned throughout the academic year.
