This week saw Sharples School take part in National STEM Week. This involved pupils taking part in activities to help improve their STEM skills, abilities and knowledge. Monday saw the Maths Fest, which occurred after school, it was a fantastic activity for Year 7 and 8 students. It involved STEM specific Maths puzzles being placed all along the Maths corridor. Prize winners were Ellesha Leach and Rumman Quereshi. The pair managed to scoop Love 2 Shop vouchers as first prize.
On Tuesday, pupils were able to get to watch a rat dissection – this was so popular that a second laboratory and dissection had to be set up so that everyone could get a good view.
Wednesday’s activities included Mr Wills (with Year 5 pupils from three of our primaries) coding Beebits Robots; Mr Singadia and the astronomers in the observatory. Also on Wednesday, we had a delegation from Singapore who were looking round Sharples School. Our visitors were so impressed with the activities, and our pupils, that they suggested an exchange programme!
The highlight for Thursday was the Year 5 Primary Bake Off in the kitchens after school. Teams from The Valley, St Paul’s and Sharples Primary battled it out to bake the best home made pizzas in “Miss Fogg’s Technical Challenge!” Who needs Mary Berry? Taking home Miss McGrath’s homemade cake as their prize, St Paul’s were crowned the winners!
Throughout this week, STEM avatars have been honing their craft and working on team building with Mrs Heaton. To give all houses a chance at extra house points: STEM Key Skills Boosters and a Number Hunt ran all week.
