It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself and welcome you to our school website. My name is Rachel Quesnel and I am very proud to be the Headteacher of Sharples School where I have been in post since January 2013.
Our school motto is ‘Learn Dream Achieve. We encourage all pupils to work hard and to aim high in order to achieve academic success and fulfil their dreams for a rewarding future career. Our main aim is always to provide stimulating, challenging, quality learning and teaching where students are fully engaged and make good progress. School facilities are excellent providing the opportunity for pupils to learn new skills and make friends both during and after school.
Sharples is the only Science Specialist College in Bolton. We pride ourselves on the outstanding facilities provided in our STEM Centre, where pupils learn in state of the art laboratories which primary school pupils can also access when they visit, as well as the expertise of our highly qualified science teachers. Science results are consistently well above national averages and in summer 2016, 99% of pupils achieved grades A*-C in all sciences, and 100% A*-C in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. In 2016 pupils achieved record rates of progress across all subjects; 70% achieved A*-C in 5 or more GCSE subjects and there was a 60% success rate in the English Baccalaureate. We are proud to announce the opening of The Singadia Observatory situated in our school grounds, which assists young astronomers in the study of our GCSE Astronomy course as well as welcoming visitors and school groups from the community and beyond. We have recently refurbished music rooms, food technology and art rooms, a new school dining room, Learning Resource Centre, MUGA pitch, our own swimming pool and brand new fitness suite, as well as improved ICT facilities in all subject areas. Zoning in year groups provides a safe, secure, caring environment.
In September 2013 Ofsted visited this school and confirmed what we already know; Sharples is ‘a good school’. Please feel free to read the full report which is on the school website. It is testimony to the good work that continues within our classrooms and beyond and recognises the exciting opportunities offered to all our pupils. I look forward to working with all our stakeholders as we embark on a journey to make all aspects of the school outstanding.
In June 2016, Sharples School became a Multi Academy Trust. Our aim is to become a cross phase Trust working closely with local primary and secondary schools to improve the educational outcomes of all children in our schools, and to make transition between phases seamless. We welcome interest from schools wishing to join our Trust who have a similar ethos and values to our own and ask you to visit the MAT area of this website for more details.
At Sharples, we demonstrate a daily commitment to our ‘high expectations and no excuses’ culture as we prepare our young people for the challenges of a rapidly changing world. We could not achieve this without your support and appreciate the value of an open working partnership with parents and carers and our wider community.
We recognise that pupils have different abilities, needs and interests and we provide a broad and flexible curriculum. Staff are qualified and experienced in ensuring that pupils achieve their potential. Close links with other educational providers including Work Based Learning providers in Bolton ensure that all our pupils have the opportunities to learn subjects and skills appropriate to their interests and ability. We offer a wide range of GCSE choices including Engineering, Astronomy, Music, Computer Science, Spanish, separate sciences and many more.
Our extra-curricular programme is extensive and broad ranging, catering for all sorts of interests and talents. Many of our pupils have achieved recognition at local and national level for their sporting achievements, and our outstanding choir enjoys an excellent reputation all over Bolton. We run everything from (astronomical) Star Parties to cheerleading troupes and educational visits to Paris, Spain and France. Please look at our list of extra-curricular activities on our website for more information.
Sharples School is a caring community that caters for pupils regardless of background, gender or beliefs. Through our charter of ‘Courtesy, Co-operation, Consideration and Common sense’ we aim to engender tolerance and respect for self and others, so that pupils leave us well equipped to play a positive and constructive role in society. All pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and conduct. Discipline in the school is firm and fair to ensure an orderly and effective learning atmosphere. In return we expect high standards of work, behaviour and uniform. Our pastoral care is first class and SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) education was judged outstanding in our most recent Ofsted inspection. The British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs are important to us and run through our pastoral and curriculum programmes. We have experienced teaching and support staff who understand and respond to individual pupil needs. We take pride in the positive partnership we have with parents. We believe that by home and school working together we can provide the very best opportunities for all our pupils and bring out the best in your child, both academically and socially. I look forward to sharing good news about Sharples School with you in the future.
Mrs Rachel Quesnel
