The Sharples Observatory Project continued this week with a visit by the steering committee to a 2.7m domed observatory in Leyland. Mr Singadia and Miss Molyneux accompanied Max (Year 6 pupil from The Oaks, who is joining Sharples in September), Lukman (current Sharples Year 10 pupil) and Roy Gibbins (Project Manager from the Rotary Club of Bolton le Moors) to Leyland to meet Len Adams who is an amateur astronomer and owner of the magnificent domed observatory in his back garden (see picture)!

Len was an absolutely fantastic source of help for our project and we are looking to have a dome of the same size on the Sharples Science roof for use by both the community and our own pupils.

Len uses his telescopic equipment all around the world to photograph planets, galaxies and stars but his favourite pastime is ‘supernova hunting’!  Len said "it is my ambition to find a brand new supernova, and to be the first person to see it. I have come a very close second several times already!"

A big thanks to Len for his hospitality and advice during our visit.
