The annual Year 7 and 8 Bolton Athletics Championships took place on Wednesday at Leverhulme Park. In sweltering temperatures, Sharples Year 7 and 8 looked to compete against the best of Bolton.

The afternoon couldn't have started much better as all-round athlete Rehman Afzal picked up a bronze medal in the 1500m, with a superb time of 5 minutes 13 seconds. To achieve a medal position is an incredible achievement, especially considering that many of the opposition attend running clubs and training weekly.

With Rehman setting the standard for the rest of the afternoon, pupils showed superb character when competing in their event and represented the school with pride. Tyler Jones finished second in his 200m heat and was unlucky to finish just outside a medal position in the final. Tyler was also part of a relay team with Gil Nogueira, Jake Spencer-Rigg and Jack Banks that made the final showing some excellent relay changeovers.

Mark Matthews made the final in his 200m race and then went one better and secured a bronze medal in the discus event.

It was a fantastic team performance in very difficult conditions and all competitors should be proud to have been selected and of their achievements on the day.
