On Monday this week, pupils from Sharples joined the cohort of North-West schools at Manchester Palace Theatre to partake in GCSE Science Live! This gave the students from Bolton’s Science Specialist College a chance to see and hear five of Britain’s top scientists. All the scientists at the event are working at the cutting edge of their specialism. As Sharples’ Safiyya Mank said: “The scientists were so knowledgeable and passionate about their subject areas. We all came away from the event today feeling truly inspired. The GCSE tips delivered by Stewart Chenery were extremely helpful too.”
Nine of Sharples’ budding young scientists attended the trip (see photo attached of the students pictured outside the theatre holding their Science Live! programmes). KS4 Coordinator of Science Mr Badawy took the youngsters on this exciting trip and was lucky enough to meet one of the speakers, Lord Robert Winston (see photo attached of Mr Badawy pictured with Lord Winston). Professor Winston is a medical doctor and has distinguished himself within Science as an expert of human fertility. He has pioneered treatments to improve In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and also to screen embryos for genetic diseases.
The other four inspirational speakers were Professor Alice Roberts, Professor Steve Jones, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Professor Mark Miodownik. Hopefully this trip will have inspired the pupils to succeed in their GCSE examinations this summer. Last year in Science, Sharples’ students achieved an outstanding 100% A*-B pass rates, with 73% of those results being A*-A grades!
