On a cold and wet evening, Sharples Year 11 athletics team looked to emulate some of the success they had last year. It was a depleted but talented squad that travelled to Leverhulme, with the team determined to put in some medal winning performances in their last outing for the school.
Jordan Kirkwood started the evening off in style, completing the 800m in a time of 2m 20 seconds, picking up the silver medal in the process and setting a New School Record (NSR), smashing 4 seconds off the previous best set by J. Tyrrell in 2003.
Jack Worsley continued the good start and picked up another silver medal for the team in the shot putt event.
Next participant was star athlete Callum Elliott. His final performance in Sharples colours didn't disappoint, as he convincingly took the gold medal in the 200m and was streaks ahead of other competitors. His time of 22.80 beats the previous school best, set by J. Dall in 2003. Even more impressively, Callum has also set another town record, with no other pupil in Bolton having ever run the distance as quickly at a town meeting.
Callum continued his success in the triple jump, winning another gold medal to add to his collection.
The relay team were determined to build on last years success and 100m runner Aadil Dipoti was brought in to run with Jordan, Callum and his twin brother Connor. The team were always going to be fast but the baton changeovers were key. They executed them perfectly for the team to finish in 1st place and finish as relay champions of Bolton.
