On Tuesday, our football teams attended training to prepare for all upcoming games this week. The following day, the Sharples School Year 7 team hosted Mount St Joseph’s. Having shown excellent progress in a short space of time, they looked like they were going to pick up all three points. Lewis Johnston and Sam Hall were superb, seeming to take their team to their first victory of the season yet unfortunately Mount St Joseph’s scored a dramatic last minute equaliser. To add more drama, the home side almost won the game with the last kick of the game when George Edmonds narrowly missed.
Year 9 had a depleted squad but this gave opportunities to others and they played as a team, even with the debutants. It was an encouraging performance and although the team couldn't record their first win of the season, they were always in the game. Keane Smith was a real threat upfront, converting his penalty with real confidence.
On Thursday night, the Year 8 team hosted Mount St Joseph's. With a fantastic squad turnout, the match started with a fast pace yet it took a while for the deadlock to be broken, with Mount St Joseph's taking the lead. Sharples soon equalised through Cole Isherwood, scoring with a well-timed volley. Sharples went behind 2-1 to a scrappy goal and despite numerous attacks the equaliser never came. Hopefully the debuts will pay off later in the season and also offer a variety of attacking threats.
Year 10 looked to continue their winning run and seal their place in the next round of the Bolton Cup. Umair Ali was the first to score as he evaded the offside trap responding to a pass from deep by Egan. Unfortunately this goal was cancelled out just before half time. In the second half, Sharples took control of the game. The defence, led by Bilal Mather, looked solid. This allowed the attacking players to concentrate on scoring. Hishaam added two more, Ali Khan on his debut and Brandon Temple also added two more including a sublime volley from outside the box. A superb second half performance put Sharples into the next round.
Next week sees Sharples football teams play in the cup and against Kearsley Academy.
